CCANW is pleased to be working with consultants Willis Newson to appoint an artist to design and create an outdoor roof garden for a new primary school in Bristol as part of our Soil Culture programme, marking the UN International Year of Soils 2015.

Summary brief:

The roof garden will be used by pupils and staff of Dolphin School as an outdoor learning space.  It has been designated a science garden by the school, but will also provide opportunities for the children to explore and learn about ecology and horticulture.

This commission seeks to engage an artist in the development and delivery of the roof garden, both in terms of its design as well as its potential use. The artist will be invited to propose how the garden might be used over time, which will involve an understanding of organic growing and primary education. The artist will be supported in developing an understanding of educational needs by the school, and will build on links already in place with the Soil Association to strengthen knowledge of organic growing and ecology. Applications from artists working in partnership with a horticulturalist are also welcome.

The commission includes:

• A budget of £14,500 (£5,000 artist fee plus £9,500 fabrication and installation budget of which £4,500 is specifically allocated to any upgrading of materials and structural elements (i.e. the flooring, the parapet, the greenhouse, planters etc.)
•  Inclusion in a CCANW Soil Culture exhibition at Bristol City Council’s Create Centre over the summer of 2015, as part of Bristol Green Capital 2015.
