Background Information:
Spacex is a registered charity and contemporary visual art organisation located in the centre of Exeter. Founded in 1974 as an artist-led studio (and incorporated in 1975), Spacex has been enabling access to contemporary art in the South West for over forty years via exhibitions and outreach programmes. Spacex is at an exciting and challenging point in its forty-year history. The organisation has changed the way it works. In place of being a gallery with a rolling programme of exhibitions Spacex now produces projects in collaboration with a wide range of partners. Working with artists remains at the core of what Spacex does. We are passionate about giving artists the opportunity to pursue new directions and take risks, and offering this new residency programme is one way in which we will continue to do this.

Residency Brief:
Spacex is inviting proposals from artists whose practice involves collaboration and an exploration of practice in a social context. This might include, for example, collaboration with a geographic or other community, young people, specialists, or with local arts or non-arts organisations. We want to invite an artist who will use the opportunity to explore the local context for research, dialogue and production. Contemporary visual artists working in all disciplines are eligible to apply. The panel will be looking for well-developed, context specific proposals, which demonstrate an innovative or experimental approach to making work in collaboration with others.
We have strong partnerships with education providers in Exeter and this residency has been developed with two key institutions in the city: Exeter College and The University of Exeter. As part of the residency there is a requirement to give one talk or workshop to each of the following groups:
-Primary Art Education PGCE students, University of Exeter.

- Foundation Degree students, Exeter College.

- Foundation Students, Exeter College.
There will also be the opportunity to work with small selected groups of students if this is appropriate.

This residency has been partly funded by crowdfunding and we’d like to invite investors (members of the public) to an informal open studio event at the end of the project. We are enthusiastic about the possibility of the selected artist developing a broader public outcome to the residency, but this is not a requirement.

We expect the resident artist to be in Exeter regularly across the six weeks, but not continuously for 6 weeks. Accommodation costs are covered for up to 40 days.

The artist will benefit from:
Use of the Spacex building as a studio space (24 hours access) and opportunity to exhibit or present an event in the space.

Professional development support from Spacex staff in working with formal education contexts.

Collaborating with a range of education professionals, students and artists from across the city.

Production support from Spacex staff.

Eligibility and Selection:
The residency is open to contemporary visual artists working in all disciplines.
A shortlist of 5 artists will be selected on the basis of their application. The selected 5 artists will be given the opportunity to take part in a short Skype interview.

We will inform shortlisted artists by 25 July and arrange the Skype interview
If you have not heard from us by 25 July please assume that you have not been shortlisted.

After the interviews one artist will be selected by the panel to take up the residency. The panel will include Kathy Norris (Project Manager, Spacex), partner representative/s from Exeter College and University of Exeter, and two associate curators.

How to Apply:
Applicants are required to submit a proposal, in no more than 400 words, illustrating how they might approach the residency, and what they hope to achieve
Please complete the application form with up to 6 images of recent work and a CV or biography (totaling 10MB max)
